I recently did a project for Reading A-Z. They worked in conjunction with a Mexican team on an ancient myth, El Conejo En La Luna, translation, The Rabbit In The Moon. The story is based on the legend of Quetzalcoatl and his encounter with a little rabbit who offered itself to the starving god. Quetzalcoatl touched by her offering elevated her to the moon. Then brought her back to earth, leaving her image to live forever in the moonlight. Here is part of a lovely letter I received from A-Z after the projects completion. "Just a notice that the artwork for this legend is officially approved. The editor thought it turned out beautifully! Also, another member of the Spanish team sent her compliments . . . "The art for this book is rather moving. It looks like fine art. This story is engrained in the folklore of Mexico, so it deserves fine art. Very beautiful." I was thrilled! Below is my painting of Quetzalcoatl in human form. I thought this story was meant for me on so many levels! I love ancient myths, "dragons" and of course rabbits! The area I live in is called the Conejo Valley, or Rabbit Valley. I have always had rabbits running through my yard, every day and every night! Also, when I was a little and looking up at the moon with my grandmother, I always saw a rabbit! There are a lot of configurations for the rabbit in the moon, but my art director let me use the one that I've always imagined! Below are a few additional images from the book. The book launch for Mother Earth's Lullaby, A Song for Endangered Species at Mrs. Figs' Bookworm was amazing. Terry Pierce the author and I signed a lot of copies! Connie read Mother Earth's Lullaby and she was wonderful. She really has a knack and knows how to keep the audience's attention. It was a lot of fun with so many friends and customers turning out! Below is a slideshow of some of the highlights! An amazing day!!! Well, the 33rd SCBWI Writer's Day was wonderful. Everyone had a great time and we all learned a lot from editors, Sarah Jane Abbott, and Allison Moor, also agents Hannah Mann and Lorin Oberweger. The other spotlight speakers were Andrea Loney, Happy Lashelle and Terry Pierce. Below is a slideshow with a few photos from the event! All photos taken by Joan B. Graham www.joangraham.com I'll be making a Ten Minute Spotlight Presentation at the 33rd Annual SCBWI Writters' Day on Saturday, October 13, 2018! The event will be held at California Lutheran University my alma mater. I'll be talking about never giving up. My talk is titled, Carol "Persistence" Heyer. I'll also be showcasing the release of my latest picture book, MOTHER EARTH'S LULLABY written by the wonderful Terry Pierce. It's a lovely, quiet nighty night book focusing on endangered species. I'll also be talking about my HUMPHREY'S FIRST CHRISTMAS picture book also being released this October. HUMPHREY'S FIRST CHRISTMAS was just released, October 2, 2018 as a board book! I'm so excited to see Humphrey moving on in this new format. Since its original release, Humphrey has sold over 100,000 copies. Now as a board book, I'm hoping that Humphrey continues to touch people's hearts! I'm thrilled with this new Humphrey! Ideals did a gorgeous job on this oversized board book. The color, editing et al is just perfect! Some fun news that I just learned, among other places, look for Humphrey's First Christmas in Walmart this holiday season!!! Here is a copy of the bookmark I had made to celebrate the upcoming release of MOTHER EARTH'S LULLABY: A Song for Endangered Animals.
I'll be handing them out at the book launch at Mrs. Figs' Bookworm in Camarillo from 3pm to 5 pm Sunday October 14th. The Author Terry Pierce and I will be there to sign copies of our book. I love animals and had so much fun doing the illustrations! Hope to see you there! |
