Draw Humphrey a beautiful blanket or cut and paste one out of fabric or fancy paper. Paint a desert, ocean, or mountain scene in the background. Whatever you want to do. A GREAT LETTER!
I just received a wonderful letter from Jill, a teacher who recently discovered Humphrey!
Here's a quote:
"I am not sure where I saw it, but somehow I saw the cover for your book, Humphrey's First Christmas. I'm sure you hear this all the time, but I totally fell in love with the cover and Humphrey. I ordered that book and Humphrey's First Palm Sunday immediately, and not only are the illustrations fantastic, but the stories are also. They are not too long and totally get the message across."
Her students did a craft project and as a visual aid for her class Jill created a Humphrey from a camel beanie! She added false eyelashes, and as she said "It couldn't be a symbol for Humphrey without them! I thought the picture was too cute not to share!
Jill also mentioned that she'd never been a "camel" person before, but because Humphrey is so terrific, she's become one now!!! Humphrey is doing his goofiest happy dance after hearing that! I think I'll join him!!!
Humphrey thinks the eyelashes are just like his and he hopes you'll be sure and add them to all of your drawings and sculptures!
Activity: A BLANKET FOR HUMPHREY
In my Christmas book HUMPHREY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS, Humphrey the Camel has lost his precious carpet blanket and works very hard through most of the story to get a new one. In the end, after all his work, he decides to give his new treasure to the tiny Baby he finds shivering in a manger.
Fleece blanket sets, available at most craft and fabric stores, are a great book activity. Families can make them together and then in the spirit of Humphrey, give them to charity.
I originally saw this activity on Maureen Spell’s site, Spell Outloud and thought it was wonderful!
At my book launch we did a smaller version of this same idea.
Baylee King was my helper and she cut two pieces of fleece exactly the same size. Laying one color on top of the other, then she cut the fringe.
Baylee tied the two different colored pieces together. This formed a double-sided blanket. You can also work with one piece and leave the fringes plain or two tie adjoining pieces together for a neat looking border.
Then she traced a cutout of Humphrey. You can draw anything you want, holly, a manger, or any other Christmas designs you like, including Humphrey!
